- Sub: Re Re Colour (sic!)
-
- Dave and Joost,
-
- Much easier than Kolor, for each application that I target *only* at colour
- (sorry about the Brit spelling, but I have to get my own back for having to
- type 'color' so much!), I simply put in the various colour resources to specify
- my chosen colour scheme - wctb, dctb, cctb, mctb, actb and crsr. If anyone
- wants to change these, they can of course using ResEdit or whatever.
-
- I disagree strongly with Joost's 'revisionist' remarks, though, about the use
- of colour. I see in colour, as do over 95% of the population. Colour is
- capable of strongly enhancing meaning, and the ease of use of applications.
- Machines which ignore colour, like NeXT, are even worse than those which ignore
- sound as part of the user interface. However, I agree with the truth in what
- you say, Joost, in that colour is, like make-up, very easily abused, and there
- is an abundance of machines which look really naff as a result of the
- gratuitous use of colour - just as young girls first trying out make-up so
- often look awful. However, they usually learn quickly!
-
- The mature and integrated use of colour as part of the user interface - and not
- just an add-on for multimedia and art applications - is a vital area in which
- we all have to mature. I do not agree that we reach maturity by avoiding using
- it, as so many others suggest.
-
- As a matter of interest, I currently have a solid blue desktop (a relaxing
- colour which also looks good if I output to video using my ColorSpace IIi board
- [I have to give a little on spelling sometimes!]), a very pale purple menu bar
- with dark blue-purple lettering, mid-purple window tops with light
- reddish-purple bars and deep blue-black lettering, pale beige menus with dark
- brown lettering, and off-white/light blue window contents etc. - the impression
- is just as professional as that of a mono Mac, and I find it very suitable for
- long hours working (sometimes 24 continuous!). And my highlighting is in
- bright orange, which I find perfect.
-
- If you want to use colour, Dave, do not look back - but put as much care into
- the choice of colour as you would into any other part of the user interface.
-
- Regards, Howard.
